Son of the mythological character "Baba Dokia", Dragobete, our patron of love (with pagan roots) is celebrated on the 24th of February. This celebration is the Romanian equivalent of St. Valentine's. Magical entity similar to Eros or Cupid, Dragobete is different to his "cousins" - he is a handsom young man who, like his Thracian ancestor from which he is derived, is protector of animals and birds who start their mating rituals during this time of year. In time, he became the protector of love and life-lasting friendship.
He is accompanied by his trustfull fairies, "Dragostele" ("The Loves") - messengers of destiny and all unchangeable life events, who whisper mellow, sweet, almost magical words (having the same effect as Cupid's arrow) to those who are in love, so that they are passed on to the desired better half, unable to resist the spell they have been put under.
